Sinterklaas in Holland
Mid November every year a boat “from Spain” arrives in a big public event in the Netherlands. It brings Sinterklaas and his little helpers – called pieten – who bring present to the kids and punish them, if they haven’t behaved well.
The big event is held on 5th of December where kids celebrate Sintaklaas at school and in the evening at home with their families. On the 6th of December he hops on his boat and goes back to Spain again.
It has been a dutch tradition for many years, but in 2013 the United Nations got involved. Yes, you have not misread – the United Nations. The video shows what caused the international attention of Sinterklaas’ - or rather the pieten’s – arrival.
Crazy, eh! What do you think about this? Big fuzz about nothing or important discussion?
Happy Sinterklaas to all the dutch people out there!
You’re welcome! Was looking forward to it and nice to share our tradition with the rest of the world.
And it is a great one Maria!
